Old Riga comprises a fairly small
interior fortification system area (built during XIII-XVIII centuries),
where unique middle-aged architectural monuments are concentrated.
In year 1510 a group of men wearing black hats started to decorate a Christmas tree with flowers. When the celebration was over they decided to burn the whole tree. This happened in Riga and is by Christmas historians considered to be start of the modern Christmas tree decorations and celebrations.
Some people believe that these men were linked to the Black Head House and the Society of Unmarried Men that owned this beautiful house right on the Town Hall Square in Riga. The rumours say that these unmarried men loved to hold wild parties. It is not impossible that today’s worldwide Christmas traditions is a funny result of some men’s desire to have another party - with a somewhat special dessert.
